Before 1945, Korea was ONE country, ruled by Japan. But after World War II, Japan lost, and
Korea was divided. The North was controlled by the Soviet Union, and the South by the United
States.
Two superpowers. Two different ideologies. Communism in the North. Democracy in the South.
Then came war! In 1950, North Korea invaded the South, trying to reunite by force. The U.S.
and United Nations helped the South. China helped the North. Millions died, and after three
years—no winner, just a ceasefire.
That’s why today, Korea is still divided. The DMZ separates them. North Korea remains isolated
