Steven Kontra is pursuing a dual master's degree in structural engineering and wood science, and his research aims to design sustainable mass timber buildings that can withstand earthquakes. The research involved actively testing a full-scale, six-story building at the largest shake-table in the U.S. at UC San Diego.

Mass timber is strong, versatile, and has a much smaller carbon footprint than concrete and steel. For Steven's research, he fitted this mass timber building with 700 sensors, and subjected it to 244 earthquakes. The result? No structural damage at any point.
