Yesterday was Ozzy Osbourne’s funeral procession through Birmingham — a moment that brought the city to a complete standstill and left many of us, myself included, reeling with emotion.

I didn’t watch the procession live. I couldn’t. It felt too raw, too real. But seeing the footage afterwards, through official streams and personal videos on social media, opened the floodgates. Nearly nine million people watched the live stream. The streets were lined ten deep. People hung out of windows, cheered, cried, and waved as the cortege passed through the city Ozzy called home. The scale of the love on display was unlike anything I’ve seen for a musician.
