Hillsdale County Sheriff’s Deputy William Henry Butler Jr. was fatally shot by Eric Michael Fiddler, 34, while assisting a traffic stop on June 27, 2024. Fiddler fled the scene of the shooting, but was found hours later hiding in a heavily wooded area by the Michigan State Police Special Response Team. Fiddler was killed in a shootout with police. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel Nessel ruled the troopers acted in self defense and declared the shooting of Fiddler justified.
