Elvis was the King of Rock’n’Roll, whereas, Pat Boone was the clean-cut face of rock’n’roll.
Before Elvis had his first hit – with Heartbreak Hotel, Pat Boone had scored seven Billboard Top-40 hits.
Pat Boone and other rock’n’rollers’ cover versions introduced R&B artists to new audiences and probably increased their record sales.
It’s interesting to note that…
Pat’s second hit Ain’t That a Shame, was Fats Domino’s first Top-40 cross-over hit.
His third hit At My Front Door , was The El Dorados’ first R&B hit and an R&B #1.
His sixth hit I’ll Be Home, was the Flamingo’s first R&B hit.
His 7th, the B-side Tutti Frutti, was Little Richard’s first R&B and Top-40 hit.
His 8th was another Little Richard cover, Long Tall Sally.
Elvis also covered those two Little Richard hits on his first two albums.
