OK, $1500/€1500 might seem like a lot of money – and it is – but once you start adding up the likes of guitars, amps, cabs and FX pedals you can reach that total quickly. Luckily, Leigh and I were able to keep things simple, because at 42 Gear Street Six, there were a few contenders that jumped straight out at us!
We began with a core pairing of the Laney Lionheart Loudpedal, a new pedal amp designed in collaboration with Tom Quayle and made in the UK for an asking price of sub $500/€500, and the $300/€300 Ibanez AZES31 guitar.
With its two channels, built-in boost and reverb, an IR loader, MIDI and loads of connectivity options, the Lionheart seems to offer everything the modern player needs in terms of core tones on stage and in the studio. Paired with the AZES31 – which is a great, affordable hardtail Strat-type – we had a rig that could play anything, and that for around half our budget!
We added some sweeteners too, of course. For those who want a speaker cabinet, we picked the Celestion Greenback-loaded Palmer 2x12 cab (which you’ll hear throughout this video), and we also had the Sweetwater 42 Gear Street pedalboard.
Pedals are always a great addition to any rig, and the selection on this board – the Walrus Audio Canvas Tuner, the EHX Lizard King Fuzz, the JHS Hard Drive Distortion/Overdrive, the Source Audio Artifakt Lo-fi Elements pedal, and the EQD/Death By Audio Time Shadows ambient multi delay – are all going to spruce up any rig tonally.
We also had reserve choices for a complete guitar rig that’ll set you back under $500/€500: the Line 6 Pod Express and the Ibanez GRG121SP, for anyone who wants humbuckers over the AZES31’s single coil pickups.
Watch Leigh’s vlog where we pick the gear and talk in more detail about why here:
