In May 1966, Alan Hart travelled to South Arabia (now part of Yemen) as the Aden Emergency raged on. Aden had become the front of the Arab Cold War, with Egyptian-backed, Arab-nationalist paramilitaries waging guerrilla war against the British presence since 1963.
It would be another two years before British forces withdrew from the area and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) was formed. Even so, the departure on the 30 November was earlier than planned by Prime Minister Harold Wilson and the resulting power vacuum contributed to a period of political instability and conflict in southern Yemen.
