Gervonta 'Tank' Davis has received approval to travel internationally to Paris, France, to support Team USA boxers at the Olympics, despite being on probation following a 2020 hit-and-run conviction in the United States.

Davis, aged 29, has received an invitation from Team USA to offer guidance to their fighters, who greatly respect him and value his assistance during this crucial competition. Tank is expected to be in France from July 19th to August 12th for this role.

Tank's strategy of conceding rounds and aiming for a single decisive knockout wouldn't suit amateur fighters, as they cannot risk relinquishing three rounds and rely solely on a knockout. In Olympic men's competition, which consists of three rounds, fighters must push aggressively from the outset to secure victory.

"Considering his position among the world's elite boxers, Mr. Davis would be a crucial asset in inspiring and backing our team to reach Olympic success and elevate our nation to the top spot at this year's Olympic Games," wrote Matt Johnson, USA Boxing's high-performance director, in a June 26 letter to the Baltimore Banner.

In Olympic competitions, fighters are required to exert continuous effort throughout the entire bout and cannot rely on securing victory with a late fight-saving knockout. Athletes such as Tank Davis would need to adapt their style significantly to succeed in this format, as there is no room for a lackadaisical approach.

It will be intriguing to observe the influence Gervonta will have on the young Team USA fighters through mentoring and guidance. Tank's powerful boxing style is better suited for professional ranks, and it remains uncertain how much impact he can impart on the amateur fighters.

Amateur boxing and professional boxing are fundamentally distinct sports, much like comparing badminton to tennis. In the professional game, the focus is on power punching, landing significant blows, and aiming for knockouts. In contrast, amateur boxing resembles fencing, where fighters aim to score points with precise shots.

The rules in amateur boxing are stricter compared to the professional arena, prohibiting fouls and excessive clinching that are more tolerated in the pros.
