Captain Beany is the alter ego of Barry Kirk, a 64 year old man living in a small town in South Wales. Thirty years ago, Barry took the most ordinary household item, a tin of baked beans, and turned it into his own extraordinary alternative reality.

As a shy kid growing up on a Port Talbot estate, Barry always felt that he was searching for an identity. He created Captain Beany in an attempt to leave his real world troubles behind, but in the process he almost completely forgot his former self. However, his journey into his alter ego became one of the best things he’d ever done.

This experimental documentary follows a day in the life of Captain Beany, but in his world it’s not so obvious what is real and what is fantasy.

Sophie is a Documentary Producer who in 2018 was named one of Edinburgh TV Festival’s Ones To Watch. Sophie went on to win a live pitch at the Edinburgh TV Festival, culminating in her directing a short film for Channel 4’s Random Acts.
