What brought us to Stewiacke, Nova Scotia was finding a church AirBnB listing. This summer has been all about finding unique and unusual stays, so this particular listing piqued our interest: 💒 💒
Once we checked into the blue church, we learned about a restaurant serving the biggest donair in all of Nova Scotia, and it was just down the street from us, so of course, we had to try it. The shaved donair meat is served in a pita with tomatoes, raw onions, and a sweet sauce made with condensed milk, vinegar and garlic powder - that sauce right there is the secret ingredient that sets Nova Scotian donair apart from anywhere else in the world.
The following day, we visited Mastodon Ridge, which is a small theme park with a giant mastodon sculpture (a bit of a random roadside attraction), and a globe that marks the halfway point between the North Pole and the Equator. Who knew this was right here in Nova Scotia?!
Our adventures continued as we drove towards Halifax and took a random detour that brought us out to the Bay of Fundy, where we got to witness the highest tides in the world.
It was a pretty fun way to kick off our Nova Scotia trip, so stay tuned for more episodes!
🚗 Nova Scotia Road Trip Adventure: Converted Church Stay, Epic Donair, Mastodon Ridge & Bay of Fundy Tides! 🇨🇦
Introduction: Exploring Nova Scotia’s Quirkiest Sights 🗺️✨
Hey guys, we’re Samuel and Audrey and this week we’re inviting you on a unique Canadian road trip through the heart of Nova Scotia! While we usually film global adventures, this year brought us closer to home and we’re sharing a one-of-a-kind getaway featuring unusual Airbnbs, epic eats, quirky attractions, and jaw-dropping coastal scenery.
The Ultimate Airbnb: A Night in a Converted Church 🕍🌈
Our journey kicks off in Stewiacke, the halfway point between the North Pole and the Equator, where we discover a stunning blue Anglican church transformed into a cozy, art-filled home. From a king-size bed surrounded by vibrant stained glass (with customizable lighting!) to a spacious living area, wood-burning stove, book collection, and even an original baptismal font, this place is full of character. We walk you through every room—including a big shower and a handy washer-dryer—and share tips on finding unique stays for your Canadian travels.
Foodie Quest: Tackling Nova Scotia’s Biggest Donair 🥙🍕
Dinner takes us to Frank’s Pizza, home of the “Oka Donair”—the biggest donair in Nova Scotia! This local legend is so massive it’s served in a casserole dish, loaded with sweet, cheesy donair meat, onions, tomatoes, and signature sauce. We dig in, compare it to donairs in Germany, and discover what makes the Maritime donair unique (hint: it’s all about that sweet, creamy sauce). Wash it down with old-fashioned root beer and a side of vintage hockey on TV for the ultimate Nova Scotia experience.
Morning Ritual: Church Sleep, Oatmeal Breakfast & Small Town Vibes ☕🍎
After a restful sleep in our converted church, we whip up a fruit-packed oatmeal breakfast and share how peaceful and welcoming Stewiacke feels. Next, we get ready for the day’s adventures and highlight how comfortable and relaxing this unique accommodation was for our Canadian travels.
Roadside Attractions: Mastodon Ridge & The Middle of Everything 🦣🌍
No visit to Stewiacke is complete without stopping at Mastodon Ridge, a quirky roadside theme park with mini golf, ice cream, a giant mastodon, and fun photo ops at the “halfway point” marker. We explain the difference between mastodons and mammoths, show off the best spots for photos, and recommend it for families and anyone who loves offbeat attractions.
