A principal spotted him but he started running. When they ran up to the boy, the boy started crying while apologizing. Confused they asked him what was wrong.
Turns out, he was taking the recycling bottles so he could exchange some snacks for his sister. Recycling scraps like plastic bottles can be exchanged for money in some countries. They have a neighbour who collects garbage and she would give them snacks if they bring some over. The recycling center may be to far for the kids to go themselves. His father has died a couple years ago. And his mother rarely returns home.
The principal ended up visiting them at home and bringing some food over. He really could've just let the boy go but he chose to do something most principal wouldn't. He cared.
He even brought the siblings to pick out new clothes and shoes. And even to a restaurant. They must have been so happy that day. They have never seen that many hamburgers. At the end, the principal even gifted the family some money around $4k in local currency which has about the same buying power as $4k USD because things cost cheaper there even if $4k isn't a lot when converted to USD.
The family is obviously very grateful and this principal might have just made their week or their year.
