On 7 February 1983, actor Timothy West spoke to ITN's Stephen Phillips at the Haymarket Theatre in Leicester, where West was rehearsing his role as Soviet dictator Josef Stalin in David Pownall's play Masterclass, directed by Justin Greene. West spoke to Phillips about the unique challenge that portraying historical figures presented, but he rejected Phillips' suggestion that he ran the risk of being type cast.
