When Jackie returned with breakfast, Sunny and Gizmo were still snuggled up together. The fish was so fresh, the chicks got a glimpse of its tail still flapping! Shadow delivered another fish then returned about an hour later to feed the chicks and chill. A bold raven suddenly landed on the high perch branch, while another circled the nest tree.
Shadow, now vocalizing loudly, was in full protective mode. The ravens persisted with “mobbing” but when the one on the high perch made a move toward the nest, Shadow handled the situation with a firm wing slap! That raven scattered, but one returned. Shadow stood firm and the raven was denied access.
The chicks laid low, staying very still and quiet until Papa gave the “all clear”. Like eagles, ravens are scavengers, so they were likely more interested in the meals in the nest pantry rather than trying to get near the chicks.
Sunny and Gizmo also worked on flapping their own wings, moving bigger sticks, nibbling on fishies, and Gizmo even took a couple of nibbles on Mama's tail feathers! They both played with a small soft white feather that was stuck in Gizmo's beak.
Jackie and Shadow delivered a total of 7 fish and Shadow brought a pile of dried fluff, which Jackie spread around the nest. Sunny and Gizmo discovered more fun sticks to move and just before sunset, Mama and Papa had another nice meal together with their fast growing chicks.
After Shadow left, Jackie must have been pretty tired, as she and the chicks tucked in early. Shadow returned before dark to check in on the family and get a quick snack before heading off again to roost for the night. It was a long day, so Mama and the chicks were tired and ready for a good night of rest.
