🏙️ Halifax Nova Scotia Travel Guide: Top Things To Do, Hidden Gems & Unique Tours 🚢🌉🍁

George’s Island: Halifax’s Newest Attraction & Historic Tunnels 🏝️🔦

We kicked things off at George’s Island, recently opened to the public and accessible by a quick 15-minute boat ride across Halifax Harbour. We were some of the first visitors to ever set foot here, touring the lighthouse, exploring the old fortifications, and delving into the legendary tunnels with a guide. The tour revealed the island’s critical military role and rich history involving the Mi’kmaq, Acadians, and British forces. We also spotted local wildlife—snakes and adorable mice—adding to the adventure.

The Iconic Waterfront & Ferry to Dartmouth ⛴️🖼️

Halifax’s waterfront boardwalk, nearly 4 km long, is the pulse of the city, lined with restaurants, shops, and museums. Relax in a hammock, snap pics of the famous drunken lamp posts, and then catch the ferry across to Dartmouth for just $2.75. The 10-minute ride offers beautiful skyline views, and once there, we soaked up street art at the Dartmouth Cove Mural Project, enjoyed a scenic stroll, and dove into the vibrant foodie scene—highlighted by the overflowing “Cropster Roll” (crab and lobster) at The Canteen.

Foodie Paradise: Markets, Smoothies & Seafood Feasts 🦞🥙

Halifax is a dream for food lovers. We sampled a blueberry smoothie at the Seaport Farmers’ Market—the oldest in North America—paired with views over the harbor. From breakfast bagels to fresh produce and craft eats, the market is perfect for morning refueling. Throughout our trip, we feasted on local seafood, including seafood towers, lobster linguini, and risotto with scallops. For even more eats, check out our dedicated Halifax food video.

History & Spirits at Halifax Citadel 👻🥃

At the Halifax Citadel, we mixed history with fun by joining a compass distillers spirits tasting inside the fort’s storied walls, sampling gin, genever, and rum, accompanied by local charcuterie. As dusk fell, we joined the ghost tour, hearing spine-chilling stories about the infamous “woman in the white dress” said to haunt the citadel at night. Daytime visits let us witness the noon gun firing, explore WWII exhibits, and see actors in period dress, making history come alive. Don’t miss the Army Museum for WWI artifacts and a replica of the Vimy Memorial.

Wines on the Water: Sailing Tall Ship Silva 🚤🍷

A highlight of our trip was sailing aboard the Tall Ship Silva for the “Wines on the Water” tour, sipping five different Nova Scotian wines as we cruised Halifax Harbor at sunset. With live music, local charcuterie, grilled lobster, and Digby scallops, it was a magical and memorable night.

Immigration & Halifax’s Diverse History 🚢🇨🇦

At Pier 21, we explored the Canadian Museum of Immigration, learning about the more than 1.5 million immigrants who passed through Halifax—Canada’s own Ellis Island. The museum’s moving exhibits shared personal stories and original artifacts brought across the Atlantic.
