*** WHAT'S COVERED ***
1. Oxidation and Reduction
* Oxidation is defined as the process of gaining oxygen.
* Reduction is defined as the process of losing oxygen.
2. Why metals are found as oxides
* Most metals are reactive and will oxidise when they come into contact with oxygen in the atmosphere.
* Unreactive metals, such as gold, do not react with oxygen and can be found as pure metals.
3. Reducing metal oxides with carbon
* Metal oxides can be reacted with carbon to remove the oxygen, leaving a pure metal and carbon dioxide.
* This process is a redox reaction where the metal is reduced and the carbon is oxidised.
4. The reactivity series and extraction methods
* Carbon can only reduce oxides of metals that are less reactive than carbon itself (e.g., zinc, iron, copper).
* Metals that are more reactive than carbon must be extracted using electrolysis, which is a more expensive process.
5. Extracting iron from iron ore
* A real-world example of reducing a metal oxide with carbon to extract a pure metal.
* The balanced chemical equation for the reduction of iron oxide with carbon is shown.
