This is a couple car review of the all-new Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan called the S580. With spectacular levels of luxury and innovative technology, Mercedes-Benz brings us the S 580, long-wheel base. The S-Class comes with a twin turbo 4L V8, a 9-speed automatic transmission with a 48-volt hybrid system called EQ Boost, this sedan does not disappoint. 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque with 4Matic AWD, it goes 0-100 km/h in 4.4 seconds. The base engine on the S 500 has a 3L inline-6 turbo with EQ Boost, 429 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. It goes 0-100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. The S-Class is the world’s best selling luxury sedan and it is predominately sold in the long-wheel base version. In fact, 9 out of 10 people will buy this version. Since it launched in 1951, more than 4-million S-Class sedans have been sold around the world. In the last 10 years this sedan has been very popular in China, USA, South Korea and Germany. The loyalty for this model is very high; around 80% of customers in Western Europe and 70% in the US who previously drove an S-Class went on to choose another vehicle from Mercedes-Benz. The S-Class has grander proportions; the long-wheel base model is 1.3 inches longer and 2 inches wider. Front legroom remains the same but an increase of 1 inch is added to the 2nd row compared to the outgoing model. Modern luxury reaches a new level with this S-Class. It has a sleek exterior design with slimmer headlights, a radiator grille, 19” to 21” wheels and seamless door handles, which are a completely new feature. They are electronically extended when the driver approaches or when the surface of the door handle is touched. Every S-Class rides on an air-suspension and can be equipped with rear-axle steering which helps you move in and out of tight spaces especially parallel parking. This system lets the steering turn the rear wheels up to 10 degrees in the opposite direction of the front wheels at low speeds. The S-Class oozes sophistication, elegance and power. This new generation of performance pairs turbo and electric boost for more than 400 horsepower in every S-Class model. Our tester has a twin turbo 4L V8 with a 48-volt hybrid system, 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. The designers have created a feel good ambience inside this quiet cabin with the highlight being the 12.8” OLED touchscreen and a 12.3” digital instrument cluster. This sedan takes you to another world when you are in it with 10 different massage programs available, pillows for your head, 64-colour LED ambient lighting, a standard Burmester 3D surround sound system and a new optional 4D system that integrates resonators into the seats. You feel isolated inside this quiet cabin and are certainly never in a rush to get out of this sedan. Other standard features include, soft close doors, heated 16-way power front seats with memory, LED logo projectors, a panoramic sunroof, a heated wood or leather steering wheel, wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, foot activated trunk release, heat and noise insulating glass. Our test model in Onyx Black metallic with a silver/grey black Nappa leather interior and high gloss poplar wood trim is stunning. It comes with extra packages including, the Premium, Sport, Exclusive and Premium Rear Seating packages which adds up to $24,500 CAD in options. We’ve also upgraded to AMG 21” multi-spoke wheels, which I think look fantastic for $2,250 CAD. Some features in those packages include, enhanced heated front and rear seats, climate comfort rear seats, a head-up display, illuminated door sills, a chrome trunk trim, AMG body styling and sport brake system.
JD Power gives the S-Class an overall score of 75/100 and a quality and reliability score of 74/100. CarEdge states the S-Class will retain 46% of its value after 5 years.
