Description:

Europe’s borders are not as fixed as you might think.
In the last two decades, the map of Europe has quietly — and sometimes dramatically — changed. From peaceful separations to major geopolitical shifts, here’s how the continent has reshaped itself:

🇲🇪 2006 – Montenegro peacefully splits from Serbia.
🇽🇰 2008 – Kosovo declares independence, recognized by most of Europe.
🇷🇺 2014 – Russia annexes Crimea, igniting a long-term conflict.
🇸🇮 2017 – Slovenia gains access to international waters through a maritime tribunal.
🇧🇪🇳🇱 2018 – Belgium and the Netherlands swap land—peacefully—due to a river changing course.

👉 This is a quick history lesson packed with surprising facts you probably didn’t learn in school.

Transcript:

You might not know how much Europe’s borders changed in the last 20 years.
In 2006,a new country was born, Montenegro. It broke away from Serbia in a “peaceful divorce”.
Two years later, in 2008, Kosovo declares independence from Serbia, over 100 countries say it’s legit, including a big part of Europe, but not Serbia.
In 2014, Russia annexes Crimea from Ukraine, setting the stage for the 2022 war in Ukraine.
In 2017, Slovenia gained approximately 80% of the Bay of Piran and a 2.5 nautical mile-wide corridor through Croatian territorial waters, providing Slovenia direct access to international waters.
In 2018, Belgium and the Netherlands swapped this land with zero drama. Because the Meuse River changed shape, The Netherlands received and extra 16 hectares of land and Belgium gained 3 hectares in return.
