On 20 December 1989, US forces invaded the Central American nation of Panama. Codenamed Operation Just Cause, the invasion's primary stated aims were the overthrow and capture of Panamanian leader General Manuel Noriega, protecting American citizens, and combating drug trafficking. The invasion aimed to also secure control of the strategically-vital Panama Canal, which American officials claimed was threatened by Noriega. Involving over 26,000 US troops, the operation resulted in hundreds of casualties on both sides and caused extensive damage to the nation's capital, Panama City. In early January 1990, after a brief period of resistance, manhunt, and standoff, Noriega surrendered to the Americans before being extradited to the United States. There he would be tried and imprisoned on drug-related charges. Presented here is a compilation of news bulletins, reports, and interviews covering the war in Panama from American invasion to Noriega's extradition. It includes the reactions of Panamanian civilians, Soviet officials, and senior British political figures including Margaret Thatcher and Douglas Hurd to the US military operation, and also features a number of amusing reports by ITN's Ken Rees on the unusual methods employed by US forces to drive Noriega out of the Vatican embassy where he was sheltering.
