I want to make it VERY CLEAR that my gripe is with Macau, NOT China. Like Hong Kong, Macau has its own government and legal system. We have felt very welcome in both and China.
What happened in Macau was simply ridiculous. We were carted from one police department to another, detained without proper explanation. After 12 hours, they took us to the border with China, where they made us walk across with our equipment and suitcases, like criminals.
When I asked why we were being deported, they said ‘you are not being deported, you can go back to Macau tomorrow’. I said ‘No thank you, we don’t feel welcome here’.
I have never experienced such a complete waste of community resources, all because I played my guitar in public without a permit.
