Barry Gibb explained in the booklet 'Tales from the Brothers Gibb' that the title of the song 'First of May' came from the birthday of his dog, Barnaby. Maurice recalled the session in which the song was created: "Barry and I were sitting at the piano, and I started playing the chords when Barry began to sing, 'When I was small and Christmas trees were tall.' I sang along, and we put a demo down with a vocal and kept the piano track. When we returned to England, we added Barry's vocal to that piano track at IBC Studios, along with a choir and an orchestra."
