Death is often a taboo topic in Western society, which is why many people don’t often talk about it. But most of us have probably, at one point in our lives, thought about how we want to die. Many people would prefer to die at home but very few manage to fall asleep peacefully surrounded by their loved ones. Modern medicine has made it possible to prolong patient’s lives. More and more elderly patients are on ventilators for an indefinite period. Doctors, nurses and hospital chaplains meet regularly to discuss ethics: Should a critically ill patient be assisted in dying, or kept alive artificially?
