This melody, from the 1600s, is one of the oldest surviving fiddle tunes we have from Scandinavia. The Långdans is a three-step dance performed by dancing a ring around the fiddler, seeming even today some kind of ritualistic worship of the fiddler itself.The first time I ever danced the Långdans was for a yule celebration, and it was a very deeply spiritual experience for me. One of the fiddlers, Nicolette Andres, is a dear friend of mine, and so I felt it fitting to end the album "Troldskab" with what is perhaps the strongest surviving example of real fiddling as folk magic and ritual. In this version, I perform a frame drum as accompaniment, as both the hardingfele and frame drum have a long and storied history as supernatural tools of divination in the North before the parasitic powers that be tried to wipe them out.

"Since 2019 Nicolette has attended Irish sessions in Boulder, CO. This path of exposure to folk music led Nicolette to find another spectacular fiddle tradition, from Norway. Nicolette began studying the Hardanger fiddle (Hardingfele in Norwegian) with Rachel Nesvig in December 2020. Through a loan program from the Hardanger Fiddle Association of America, Nicolette was accepted to study and loan an instrument. Nicolette is passionate about oral traditions of music, and let that guide her to plan her first trip to Norway in May 2022 to visit the Ole Bull Academy. Nicolette now regularly performs Norwegian folk music for dance and listening in Boulder, Colorado on her own instrument, and continues to study the tradition."
