The people of Ghana have just elected a new president, John Dramani Mahama, who was once the President of Ghana in 2012. The return of President John as President has been received with mixed reactions, with some people celebrating a fresh start and others questioning his ability to address Ghana’s economic challenges. Although it is not clear which direction President Dramani’s administration would go, some of his recent speeches have given a few hints at least in regard to Ghana’s relationship with its neighbor, Burkina Faso. In a recent speech, President Dramani blasted his predecessor, Akufo Addo for destroying Ghana’s relationship with Burkina Faso. And then he promised to build that relationship. On December 9th 2024, Ghana's Electoral Commission declared former president and opposition leader John Mahama the president-elect following the general elections on Saturday, December 7th. According to the reports, President Mahama won with 56.6% against 41.6% for Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia, who was contesting for the ruling party, NPP. Speaking after the announcement of the result, Mahama said he felt "humbled" that he and his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had "chalked one of the best results in the electoral history of Ghana". He also noted that Ghana had "made history" by choosing its first female Vice-President, Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang.
