Accra is the economic and administrative center of the Greater Accra Region, as well as the anchor of the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA), which has a population of roughly 4 million people, making it Africa’s thirteenth-largest metropolitan area. Accra was certified as a “Gamma” level global metropolis by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network think tank in 2020, suggesting a growing level of worldwide impact and connectednes. It houses important government and non-governmental ministries, insurance companies, bank headquarters, and large markets that import the majority of the food supply. Accra has a land area of 225.67 km2 (87.13 sq mi) and a population of 4.2 million people in 2020. It is divided into 12 local government districts: 11 municipal districts and the Accra Metropolitan District, which is the capital’s only district with city status. Accra was formed through the amalgamation of different towns around British Fort James, Dutch Fort Crêvecoeur (Usher Fort), and Danish Fort Christiansborg as Jamestown, Usshertown, and Christiansborg, respectively, and served as the capital of the British Gold Coast between 1877 and 1957. From 19th-century colonial architecture to modern skyscrapers and residential towers, the capital’s architecture reflects its past.
