“Song of the Oprichnik” is a new solo album by Ruslan Aarsland, author of such books: ‘Dungeon Synth: The Rbirth Of The Legend’ and ‘Russian Black Metal’. This album consists of one experimental track over half an hour long. “Song of the Oprichnik” continues the sound philosophy of such albums as Aarsland - ‘Rasputin’ and Devilgroth - ‘Ivan Grozny’. Oprichniki are warriors from the personal guard of Tsar Ivan the Terrible. The Oprichniki Guard wore black clothes, and their symbols were a broom and a dog's head. Also this army had a resemblance to a military-monastic order. Their life was governed by a statute that resembled a monastic one and implied daily services, abstinence and fraternal meals. The song is sung as if on behalf of the oprichnik himself, translating his view of the world and his formidable disposition. The lyric is written using the old Church Slavonic language.
