On Friday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that the Canadian government will provide $100 million to “meet the urgent food needs’ of vulnerable Canadians amid the COVID-19 outbreak in the country, stating that the work done by food banks and their volunteers is “essential.” He said the money would help with the delivery of food to vulnerable people, and support organizations like Food Banks Canada and the Salvation Army.

Trudeau commented on U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that the medical supply firm 3M will stop selling N95 respirators to Canada during the COVID-19 pandemic, saying that it “could hurt Americans as much as it could hurt anybody else.” Trudeau added that he is confident Canada will continue to receive necessary equipment, and that the government is doing “everything they can” to ensure that “no part of Canada” is without essential supplies. He did not say if Canada would put into place retaliatory measures in response.

Trudeau commented on the “level of integration” between the United States and Canada amid the COVD-19 pandemic, saying that the U.S. “relies” on both essential supplies and staff from Canada, and that it would “be a mistake” if the Trump administration reduced the trade of medical essentials.
