In WWII, Nazi Germany turned to a Berlin factory called Temmler Werke to mass produce Pervitin, a methamphetamine sold over the counter. Praised as a “miracle drug,” it kept soldiers awake for up to 48 hours and became a key ingredient in Blitzkrieg strategy. At its peak, over 800,000 pills were pressed daily, with 35 million shipped in just a few months. After the war, the Soviets seized the factory, and its legacy faded into ruin. Today, nothing remains of the site, but its story reveals a chilling mix of pharmaceutical ambition, military desperation, and forgotten history.
