The Supremes were an American girl group formed in 1959 in Detroit, Michigan, originally called the Primettes. In the 1960s, they became Motown's most commercially successful group and the most successful vocal band in America. They intentionally adopted a glamorous image, performing in intricate makeup, high-fashion dresses, and wigs. With elegant choreography by Motown's Cholly Atkins, they showcased a rock and roll style rooted in R&B.
