This is a Motormouth couple car comparison of the all-new Kia Sportage and the Hyundai Tucson compact SUVs. Both are offered with gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The Sportage and Tucson share the same platform and powertrains including, a gas, hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The gas model has a 2.5L 4-cylinder with an 8-speed automatic transmission, 187 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque. FWD and AWD options are available. The Hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains have a 1.6L turbocharged 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid has a combined 227 horsepower with standard AWD. The Tucson PHEV has a combined 261 horsepower with 53 km/33 miles of EV range. The Sportage PHEV total output has not been announced yet, we assume it will be the same as the Tucson and the Sorento PHEV’s with 261 horsepower. It will have a targeted EV range of 51 km/32 miles and standard AWD. The Sportage plug-in hybrid will arrive this summer. Although these two SUV’s have plenty in common, they are very different looking. The Sportage has a sharp and strong presence with a tiger nose grille floating design and unique boomerang daytime running lights. The Tucson a distinct and sharp looking exterior with angular body panels, a long hood, short overhangs and a front radiator grille with available dark chrome accents. Both gas models come standard with 17” wheels, available 19” wheels. They both have similar standard features, an 8” touchscreen with wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto, heated front cloth seats and a manual driver and passenger seat. Available features include, a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, a power driver’s seat and wireless charger. The Sportage has a larger available touchscreen and digital driver display at 12.3”, the Tucson 10.25”. In Canada, the Tucson gas model is missing quite a few features that the Sportage gas model has available. There is no offering on any trim of driver seat memory, a power tailgate, ventilated front seats, heated rears seats, a power passenger seat, the larger 10.25” touchscreen with navigation and surround view monitor. These features are available on the Tucson Hybrid and PHEV models. In the US, the gas model specs are different many of these features are available in a package or on the higher trims. Sportage AWD starts at $30,395 CAD/$27,790 USD, the Tucson $31,955 CAD/$27,300 USD. Sportage Hybrid $35,995 CAD/$27,290 USD, Tucson $41,051 CAD/$29,750 USD.Tucson plug-in hybrid $45,651 CAD/$35,400 USD. There is no pricing yet for the Sportage PHEV.
