John Lennon was the edgy Beatle; he had a tragic childhood and grew up harboring anger, struggling to treat others decently. He continued to have affairs, prompting Yoko Ono to introduce her Chinese assistant, May Pang, to him, suggesting that he might as well have an affair with someone she knew. Subsequently, John Lennon spent time with May Pang in his apartment in the U.S. Julian had never met his father while Lennon was with Yoko Ono, but he began to see him frequently once he started spending time with May Pang.
The original handwritten lyrics gifted to Julian were at his father’s and Yoko's place when John died. Yoko refused to return the lyrics, along with other belongings, to Julian after John's passing. As a result, Julian had to secretly buy them back when Yoko put the lyrics up for auction.
"Like one who takes away a garment on a cold day, or like vinegar poured on a wound, is one who sings songs to a heavy heart." Recently, Julian mentioned in an interview that he initially loved the song, but over time, he developed a complicated love-hate relationship with it.
