Amid the chaos, people wanted someone to blame. Some blamed foreigners while some blamed Catholics. Others prayed desperately for some sort of divine intervention. The king and his court, watching helplessly from a distance, eventually ordered the use of fire breaks and gunpowder to halt the fire's advance.
