Today we’re taking a look at five different Plexi pedals! And with stompboxes from five different makers and at five different budget levels, there’s certainly going to be one to suit everybody here. These are the pedals we’re comparing:

NUX Plexi Crunch at Sweetwater:
Bogner La Grange at Thomann:
La Grange at Sweetwater:
Tone City Golden Plexi 2:
Carl Martin Plexi Ranger:
Ramble FX Marvel Drive 3:

I’ve had the Bogner for years, sold on it instantly after watching Pete Thorn’s amazing video demo. And for a long time, that was the only MIAB – Marshall In A Box – pedal I ever needed. But recently, I got to try the affordable offerings from NUX and Tone City, and these excellent budget pedals really got me into exploring more Plexi possibilities.

So today, we’re trying out five together, and hopefully it’ll help you decide which one you prefer. The Bogner is a true all-rounder, with loads of features and great Plexi tones from pushed cleans all the way up to full-on high-gain brutality. The NUX and the Tone City are rawer, and both get pretty filthy when you turn them up. The Carl Martin Plexi Ranger is a double pedal, like the La Grange, but it has an awesome treble booster side alongside a pretty raucous Plexi drive, and the exquisite Ramble FX Marvel 3 is boutique in every way, shape and form.

In the video, I run the five pedals through a classic rock loop played on the bridge humbucking pickup of my Epiphone Les Paul. The pedals are running into my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic on the clean channel, with no reverb. Which one do you think sounds best?

23:29 Why the La Grange?
24:34 Why the Plexi Crunch?
25:15 Why the Golden Plexi 2?
26:11 Why the Plexi Ranger?
26:56 Why the Marvel 3?

My setup was as follows: I ran the five pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loop.
