For 26 years I was homeless and chronically addicted to drugs. Feeling like the prosocial community completely detached Itself from me.
Being homeless the police herded us like cattle so we didn't have places to sleep for too long. The effects of being labelled as homeless, transit drug addicts, criminals, etc, anything other than a person, reinforced my feelings that the prosocial community was not approachable for me to ask for help. I felt stuck. I was stuck. But it wasn't until I met a man who was also homeless in his past, and a drug addict, who changed his life around and became a part of a prosocial community, who made me feel like he was approachable for me to ask for help.
Today I am not homeless. I have over 2 years of being clean and sober and I'm now a certified "Recovery Mentor". I feel that the key to fixing the homeless and drug problems is to reestablish the connections with the people who are feeling Helpless and give them hope through positive actions. Through supplying them with food & clothing resources, to housing and treatment. Most importantly, we need to love them until they can learn how to love themselves. My Name is Edreece aka Herq and I'm a recovering addict. Thank you.
