"When we began as a species is an incredibly complex and complicated question to answer", explains paleoanthropologist Ella al Shamahi, whose work has taken her to contested and conflicted regions including Yemen, Somaliland and Iraq, in search of a better understanding of human origins. "We used to think we were probably about 200,000 years old," she adds.

Recent dating of fossils discovered at Jebel Irhoud in Morocco suggests our species began all over Africa much earlier than we thought, at least 300,000 years ago. However, paleoanthropology is an ever-evolving and highly debated area of study, "we really, really still are at the early stages, of understanding our history," says al Shamahi. "But technology is really informing our understanding of who we are and where we come from. We just don't know what this could inform in the future."
