Ballad of Clell Miller | The Outlaw Who Rode with Jesse James & Died in Northfield!
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
He was born where the black dirt runs, in old Missouri clay,
Could’ve tilled a farmer’s fields, but the war called him away.
At fourteen ridin’ with Bloody Bill, too young to understand,
That once you ride with shadows, you’re a wanted man.

[Verse 2]
They caught him when the smoke cleared, too young to hang or shoot,
Locked him down on Gratiot Street, in chains and worn-out boots.
His daddy lied to set him free, swore, “We’re loyal to the Blue,”
But Clell came home with fire in his eyes and nothin’ left to lose.

[Chorus]
Now he rides in the stories that the lawmen try to hide,
With Jesse, Frank, and Younger boys, he took that outlaw ride.
From Hot Springs down to Gad’s Hill, he left a bloody trail,
But it all came down in Northfield when the townsfolk tipped the scales.
And they say you die a legend, when your soul goes down in flames,
But all Clell wanted was a way to outrun a tarnished name.

[Verse 3]
They called him a killer, though he swore he’d never shot,
Said the law already damned him, whether guilty or not.
“If they’ll string me up,” he snarled, “I’ll bear the outlaw’s chain,””
So he joined the James gang, chasin’ silver, lead, and fame.

[Verse 4]
On Gad’s Hill they stopped the train, with masks and loaded guns,
Took the silver from the safe, while the passengers all sprung.
But Clell just stared at empty fields, where his old life used to be,
Wonderin’ if freedom’s worth the chains you never see.

[Verse 5]
They stormed the First Bank’s iron vault, in Northfield’s dusty square,
But the town fought back with rifles, and the boys got caught out there.
Clell took lead and hit the dirt, with Bill Chadwell by his side,
His bones were bound for science, but his legend never died.

[Chorus]
Now he haunts in the stories that the lawmen try to hide,
With Jesse, Frank, and Younger boys, he took that outlaw ride.
From Hot Springs down to Gad’s Hill, he left a bloody trail,
But it all came down in Northfield when the townsfolk tipped the scales.
And they say you die a legend, when your soul goes down in flames,
But all Clell wanted was a way to outrun a tarnished name.

[Bridge]
You can call him a sinner, you can call him a thief,
But he was just a boy once, full of anger and belief.
He saw his brothers fall in war, learned to hate the iron gates—
Sometimes the devil’s not a demon, just a man who tempts his fate.

[Final Chorus]
Now he rests in the stories that the lawmen try to hide,
With Jesse, Frank, and Younger boys, he took that outlaw ride.
The Pinkertons came chasin’, but they couldn’t change the game—
You can bury the body, but you can’t kill the name.

[Outro]
(Spoken or sung softly)
Clell Miller… rode with the damned, died with the brave.
Left his bones out west, but his story still rides the plains.
