Peat moss is commonly found in seed starting mix but mining it can be harmful to the environment. We are always looking for ways to improve our homestead and I'm hoping that this will work!

Most seed starting mixes don’t have any nutrients in them and neither do leaves that decompose by themselves. Peat moss is great for moisture control and so is leaf mold. (This is the common term for what I’m making)

Leaf mold can be made in plastic bags but I’m trying to reduce my waste by using buckets that I can reuse over and over again.

Although my experiment won’t be ready for this seed starting season, it should be ready by next spring. I’m hopeful that I may have found a free solution to starting seeds at home that will save our peatlands from being mined.

Peatlands are extremely important for sequestering carbon. If you’re interested in learning more, check out the article recently posted by the New York Times called: “Peat is the Unsung Hero of Carbon Capture”

ABOUT US: We are Alex and Elaina, a couple in our 20s who are currently living on the 3-acre farm in southern Pennsylvania where Alex grew up. We have a garden, backyard chickens, and build or fix anything that we need to. We still work corporate day jobs, but are working to eventually leave the 9-5 lifestyle in favor of a self-built, debt-free, homestead on 6 acres nearby.

We upload a YouTube video every Saturday night at 7️⃣pm EST, and post daily on Instagram!
