The domestic horse, Equus ferus caballus, has been a companion to humans for thousands of years, originally domesticated around 6,000 years ago in Central Asia. Horses have an incredible memory, and they can remember people, places, and experiences for years, showing loyalty and intelligence. They communicate using a range of body language signals, including ear movements, facial expressions, and tail swishes. Horses can sleep both lying down and standing up thanks to a unique locking mechanism in their legs called the stay apparatus. With over 300 different breeds worldwide, horses vary widely in size, color, and capabilities, from the small Shetland Pony to the powerful Shire horse.
