The American composer is one of electronic music’s most influential modular synthesists.
Since the late '60s, Ciani has nurtured a creative affair with a rare analogue instrument called the Buchla. She was especially drawn to the instrument's ability to move sound around speakers; its four audio channels are capable of achieving quadraphonic, psychoacoustic topographies moulded to a specific space. The result is often swirling with soft pads and unmoored arpeggios, reminiscent of the New Age movement.
