Bridging to the Psychedelic Matrix - the therapeutic potential of EMDR as a Psychedelic Assisted Therapy.
Compelling evidence from recent psychedelic trials has sparked public interest and has been hailed as a renaissance for the healing potential of psychedelics. Therapeutic ways of working have moved on significantly since the first wave of psychedelic assisted therapy techniques in the 1960s. During the 40-year hiatus, trauma informed practice and advances in psychological conceptualisation have paved the way for a new wave of innovative therapeutic tools. The authors outline a potential bridge between psychedelic therapy and effective, evidence based, trauma informed practice. Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) is an empirically validated psychotherapy that is used globally to treat a broad range of psychological issues. EMDR therapy serves as a robust preparation phase to assess participant’s tolerance for somatic and emotional dysregulation, which is difficult to achieve with other approaches. Reactivation (flashback) experiences respond well to EMDR therapy but do not consistently respond to conventional therapeutic techniques. Furthermore, psychological content from underwhelming psychedelic experiences is often overlooked by other approaches but can be drilled into using EMDR therapy. EMDR therapy unlocks extra layers of psychological content and promotes therapeutic outcomes from non-ordinary states of consciousness.Developing an EMDR protocol to dovetail with psychedelic assisted therapy is an unfolding process. This presentation explores:- A repertoire of tools currently used by EMDR practitioners, including features of the Standard, Attachment-Informed and Inter-Generational EMDR protocols.- How EMDR protocols can be merged with best practice and innovative techniques from psychedelic preparation and integration therapy.- How EMDR therapy fills the gaps left by psycho-educative, relational, community-based and non-specific preparation and integration therapies.Vignettes of case material will be used to demonstrate the therapeutic potential of EMDR therapy when working with content from non-ordinary states. The authors will also outline the details of their EMDR practitioner training programme using the newly developed psychedelic-assisted therapy protocol- PA-EMDR.This showcase presentation is suitable for all conference attendees.

Hannah is an integrative psychotherapist, clinical supervisor and researcher. She is a registered member of the Institute of Psychedelic therapy and offers psychedelic integration therapy using EMDR in her private practice. She has experience working with people receiving Ketamine infusions as part of NHS trials, as well as clients attending Psilocybin and Ayahuasca retreats abroad. She has helped many clients presenting with PTSD caused by ingesting psychedelics. Hannah has studied the neuroscience of psychedelics and EMDR therapy on a cognitive neuroscience Masters (Cardiff University) and an EMDR Masters (University of Worcester). She is currently researching psychedelic assisted EMDR therapy as part of a professional Doctorate.
