Motivational Morning with Curator David Gilbert. "Today I’m showing you a print by Edwin la Dell, an etching called Green Lily which has been hanging in my living room for the last 19 years. I was curator at Rotherham Art Gallery from 1997 to 2001, and while I was there I found some prints by Edwin la Dell in our stores. I liked them a lot, but I didn’t know anything about him, so I started a bit of detective work. It turned out he was born in Rotherham in 1914. He won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in 1936, and went on to become Head of Printmaking there from after the Second World War until just before his death in 1970. He taught all of the important postwar British artists and was hugely influential in reviving printmaking in the U.K. I managed to contact his son Tom, who had a treasure trove of Edwin’s work including paintings, annotated proofs and hundreds of original editions, all jammed into a plan chest in his office, and I worked with him to put together a major touring exhibition. After the tour Tom asked me if I would like a print, and he very generously gave me this etching which has hung in my house ever since."
