For nearly forty years, she used her talent, personality and four octave voice to dazzle fans around the world. While she started off strong with a hit single right out of the gate, it wouldn’t be until a couple of years later that she became a folk heroine for black women everywhere with one particularly gut-wrenching song. Since she had just as strong a voice as other reigning queens of soul and R&B, often upstaging the headliners for whom she opened, early in her career, it appeared inconceivable that she would lose the opportunity to claim the fame and fortune she seemed destined to achieve.
