The Battle of New Market was fought on 15 May 1864 in Virginia. On this land, an ad-hoc Confederate force of 4,100 local men defeated the much larger U.S. Army of the Shenandoah commanded by Major General Franz Sigel, a native of Germany. Approximately 257 cadets from Virginia Military Institute (VMI) took part in the fighting; 10 of them were killed in action, 50 were wounded.
