As he landed on the shores of Spain, he looked back over the sea, beyond which there was a different world. One, he was once destined to rule but then, he wasn’t. Running for his life, leaving behind everything he ever knew, Abd al-Rahman finally had found a home in Al-Andalus, Muslim Spain.For the next 700 years, Muslim presence on the Iberian Peninsula changed the course of history. Not only did Arab and Berber traditions found their way to Spanish culture but also, by extension of their empire, found their way to the New World. For instance, did you know that California means "Land of the Caliph"?
