
The Guardian reports that preparations are under way to transfer the records to UK Biobank, a major research hub housing medical data from half a million volunteers. The database is accessible to universities, scientific institutions, and private firms.
According to the paper’s analysis, one in five successful applications for access came from China. Health officials have spent the past year considering whether additional safeguards are needed as the data, stripped of names and birth dates but still potentially identifiable, is combined with genetic and medical information.
Dearlove questions how the UK has ended up in this position, noting: “There’s no way the Chinese would let us into their country.”
