Today, the world says farewell to a true icon — Ozzy Osbourne, the godfather of heavy metal, has passed away at the age of 76.
Born December 3, 1948, in the industrial town of Birmingham, England, John Michael “Ozzy” Osbourne rose from humble beginnings to become one of the most influential and electrifying figures in rock and metal history. His unmistakable voice, outrageous persona, and unrelenting passion reshaped music forever.
Ozzy first captivated the world as frontman of Black Sabbath, a band that essentially created heavy metal. With game-changing albums like Paranoid, Master of Reality, and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, the band unleashed dark, doomy riffs and apocalyptic lyrics that gave voice to a generation. Ozzy’s eerie, tortured vocals became the sound of rebellion.
After parting ways with Sabbath in 1979, Ozzy launched a legendary solo career. Blizzard of Ozz (1980), featuring guitar prodigy Randy Rhoads, produced eternal anthems like “Crazy Train” and “Mr. Crowley.” He followed it up with a stream of now-classic albums including Diary of a Madman, Bark at the Moon, No Rest for the Wicked, No More Tears, and Ozzmosis.
Beyond the music, Ozzy became a pop culture phenomenon — infamous for biting the head off a bat, urinating on the Alamo, and starring in the hit reality show The Osbournes, which reintroduced him to millions as the foul-mouthed, loveable metal dad.
In his final decades, despite battling health issues including Parkinson’s disease and multiple surgeries, Ozzy continued to fight — releasing Ordinary Man (2020) and Patient Number 9 (2022), both critically acclaimed and packed with raw emotion and blistering guest performances.
He sold over 100 million albums, won Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with Black Sabbath in 2006, and received the Global Icon Award at the MTV Europe Music Awards.
Ozzy was chaos and charisma. Vulnerable yet indestructible. Terrifying and tender. A madman, a showman, a husband, a father, a legend.
Gone but never forgotten — the Prince of Darkness has left the stage, but his scream lives forever.
