
Neither could he. These thin box straps are almost invisible against a seal’s fur, especially when submerged in water. Like many animals, seals are alert to predators, crashing waves, or aggressive rivals. But plastic? That’s not part of their evolutionary warning system. And so, this male likely swam straight through the loop.
He now joins the long list of victims we see again and again. Not because they aren’t smart, but because plastic is a silent threat in their world. We may be able to rescue some, but most won’t be as lucky. The real solution is to prevent this pollution from entering the ocean in the first place.
