LG G5 OLED TV Review: Excellent HDR Brightness and Colour Performance (vs LG G4)

The LG G5 is the latest 2025 flagship TV and offers stunning HDR images thanks to its new Primary RGB Tandem Panel and Alpha 11 Gen 2 image processing.

There is no such thing as a perfect TV and there are some teething issues with the G5. The first is that the panel comes out of black too quickly which then manifests into floating blacks in some HDR10 and Dolby Vision content. There is also an issue with near-black posterisation and gradational issues, again within some torture test content. This doesn’t happen with all content, but I first noticed this behaviour on a Primary RGB Panel used in a competing brand's demo recently and then again on a G5 that I was able to get hands-on with before this review sample arrived with me.

Thankfully, these issues should get fixed by the engineers at LG and updated via firmware, but don’t base any buying decision on possible fixes, until they are confirmed to have been fixed. Because of these issues, the G5 scores a 9/10. It would have been another 10/10 if these issues hadn’t affected overall image quality. If LG does fix these issues and updates all retail G5 models, we will revisit this in future reviews of retail sets we have lined up.

Overall, the LG G5 is a big step up in colour volume and HDR brightness performance that brings it much more in line with the competition from QD-OLED in those terms. The video processing remains some of the best available on the market and pushes Sony yet again this year. Even with the small issues highlighted, the G5 is a big step up in all other areas of image quality and comes highly recommended.
