Retro Release: 34 years ago today—on August 12, 1991—Metallica released Metallica (commonly known as The Black Album), their fifth studio album, produced by Bob Rock and recorded at One on One Recording Studios in Los Angeles between October 1990 and June 1991.

Streamlined, heavy and hook-driven compared with their earlier thrash records, Metallica moves from the stadium-ready thunder of “Enter Sandman” to the orchestral ballad “Nothing Else Matters,” the brooding “Sad But True,” and the widescreen melancholy of “The Unforgiven.”

It debuted at No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, selling about 598,000 copies in its first week, spent four consecutive weeks atop the chart, and has since become one of the best-selling albums of the SoundScan era—selling tens of millions worldwide.

How do you feel about this album? Will you spin it?
