In UPSC mains, you will see that the people who are getting selected, Generally, their GS score is between 400-420. The main difference comes from 3 papers, which is Essay, Ethics and Optional. Optional over here is the most important paper, Because if you are scoring 125 out of 250 in GS, Then you might be the topper in that paper. But in Optional, 125 out of 250 is considered an average or below average score. Here you can score 150-160 in a paper. So what happens is, the paper is the same, the marks are the same, But the potential to score is much more in the Optional. Which is why it's very important that you choose your Optional well. Your Optional should be chosen on the basis of 3 basic criteria. Number 1, what is your interest? Because you will have to study this for 4-6 months. If you are not enjoying it, then your life will be ruined. Second, are its resources available to me? Either you have done your graduation in this, Or I have to know if its coaching is available or not. And third, in recent years, How many scores are coming in this Optional? Because in recent years, the highest score in this Optional has been 240. Maybe you should choose another one.
