How can OCD make you argumentative?

Certain types of OCD, including Existential OCD and Moral Scrupulosity OCD, can cause individuals to obsess about what is logical or right vs wrong.

For individuals with this type of OCD, hearing someone say something they believe is wrong can feel intolerable and may cause them to argue their opinion to an excessive degree. However, not stopping the argument until they feel they’ve won, or until the other person concedes or until they get a “just right” feeling that their point has been made, are actually compulsions that make the OCD worse.

So what can you do?

Pick your battles!

1. First, mindfully slow down to increase awareness that as you’re trying to prove your point logically to others, it’s actually an OCD compulsion that’s causing an argument.

2. Next, make the choice not to argue your point, or you can concede the argument if it’s already started. As an exposure you can specifically say “I’m wrong” to the other person (this is an exposure tactic that can stop OCD in its tracks). You can also say to yourself, “I’m choosing to preserve my relationships with others rather than indulge OCD compulsions.
When you choose relationships over OCD, you’ll win every time (even if you lose the argument). Has OCD ever made you argumentative?
